Holiday Activities for Seniors
The holidays are a time for joy and celebration. Unfortunately, many seniors no longer feel this way when the holiday season comes around. Many are lonely and isolated, as they have lost their older friends and family. And with the colder and darker weather, seniors are more likely to stay indoors and be depressed.
If you have a special senior in your life, there are ways you can make sure they are having a merry and bright time during the holiday season. Try to make them a priority with family gatherings and fun activities they can participate in.
Here are some ideas for activities you can do with your senior loved one during the holidays!
- Send Greeting Cards: Your senior may have friends or family far away that they cannot visit. Help them make and send some holiday greeting cards. This will help them spread cheer to everyone they love, no matter where they are, getting them into the holiday spirit.
- Create Handmade Ornaments: Anything can be made into an ornament if you try! However, if you don’t want to make anything you already have into ornaments, you can buy an ornament-making kit. These will be a cute and fun new addition to your Christmas tree or theirs!
- Help Them Decorate: Get everyone together to decorate your senior’s space. Whether they are in their own home or a senior living community, decorations will brighten up their holiday season. The decorations should also give them some holiday memories to think about.
- Wrap Gifts: If your senior needs help wrapping gifts, this can be a fun way to bond during the holiday season. Or they can help you with yours!
- Make a Gingerbread House: This activity is fun, creative, and delicious! Once they have created their gingerbread house, they will feel a sense of accomplishment and will have a treat to enjoy.
The Holidays at a Senior Living Community
Seniors who live at a senior living community never have to be alone during the holidays. They are also never bored because the activity schedule is always booked with fun and festive activities for them to enjoy every day!
